10 Vehicles For Every Kind of Road Trip

Jun 6, 2016

There’s nothing more American than the road trip. Whether it’s cruising the Pacific Highway or making that musical pilgrimage you’ve always dreamed of, now’s the time to plan your next trip.

In that spirit, we’ve picked 10 great rides for 10 kinds of adventures:

When you want to keep it retro

A throwback to the times when road-tripping was simpler. If you can get your hands on an original Type 1 or Type 2 Volkswagen van, the pure nostalgia will outweigh any woes regarding fuel efficiency or horsepower. With one of these, you’re bound to make plenty of friends on the road.

02. Corvette Stingray

The Corvette is widely known as the original American sports car, and the Stingray has already been dubbed “the best sports car America has ever built.” So if you’ve got long stretches of highway ahead of you and fast driving is in your blood, here’s the answer you’re looking for.

03. Ford Mustang

When you just have to feel the wind in your hair

Sometimes road trips call for a convertible, and the Ford Mustang happens to be one of the most iconic convertibles of all time. If you go for the sixth generation, you’ll have the advantage of fully independent rear suspension and an optional 2.3 L EcoBoost engine.

04. Jeep Wrangler

If you’re less interested in paved roads than dirt roads – and other offroad terrain – it’s hard to beat the thrill of a Jeep Wrangler. Every day will feel like an adventure, and as long as you and your crew are strapped in, you’ll find plenty of freedom in that open-air frame.

05. Chevrolet Astro

You don’t have to be a garage rock band to appreciate the throwback appeal of the Chevy Astro. Compact but spacious, cool by virtue of necessity, the Astro van has a nostalgic '90s feel. No plaid shirts required.

06. Mazda CX-5

When you’re keeping it practical and cost-effective

For the more frugal road-tripper, fuel efficiency is more than just a nice bonus – it can be a must-have. Thankfully, you’ll get quite a deal with the CX-5’s 35 MPG highway, one of the best rates of any SUV on the market. It’s also pretty dang comfortable, and that doesn’t hurt.

07. Porsche Boxster

Sometimes all it takes is two people to have an outstanding road trip, and you and your best friend or significant other will feel right at home in the Porsche Boxster. The mid-engine rear-drive configuration allows for increased traction and faster acceleration, and it sure doesn’t hurt to have storage in the front and the back of this car.

08. Ram 1500

Perhaps you’ve got a lot of cargo to haul on your road trip, and if you do, look no further than the Ram 1500. It has plenty of raw power (EcoDiesel 3.0L V-6 240hp engine) to match an impressive 29 MPG highway, so you and your load will get the best of both worlds.

09. Tesla Model S

When you want to see what the future feels like

What better excuse to experience the most innovative electric cars on the market than a good old-fashioned road trip? If you’re not sure what the big deal is, consider that the Model S boasts the electric equivalent of up to 106 MPG highway. Yes, we know it’s quite impressive. Make sure to research charging stations along your route.

10. Toyota Prius

If you’re not ready to take the plunge and go full electric, consider a sensible hybrid like the Prius. The original model will get you 50 MPG highway, but the later models feature a ton of interior space – so much space that you might think you’re in a Toyota RAV4.
